Canal Point, Florida and the Palm Beach Canal

A 40 mile canal was authorized in 1913 and completed in 1917 to link coastal Palm Beach County with the Lake Okeechobee communities and farming and cat fishing industries. Canal Point became the port city where the canal entered Lake Okeechobee. Remains of the original locks are a destination for cold weather fishing for speckled perch. Today the unincorporated community has a 2020 population of 473 and provides access to the Hoover Levee and famed bass fishing in The Big Lake.
